ADA Compliance for Emergency Management
There has been a lot of discussion recently about the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in regard to Emergency Management. Much of the discussion we’ve heard has focused on shelter facilities and accessibility, but Title II of the ADA requires that all facets of the Emergency Management Program be accessible… including public information, warning notification, and long-term recovery, among others.
Many valuable ADA resources for local governments and government units can be found in the ADA Best Practices Toolkit, provide by the United States Department of Justice: http://www.ada.gov/pcatoolkit/toolkitmain.htm.
Within the toolkit, the following documents SPECIFICALLY relate to Emergency Management:

- ADA Toolkit Ch7 Addendum 1 – EM Program Checklist (HTML)
- ADA Toolkit Ch7 Addendum 2 – Shelter Program (HTML)
